Biographies: Learning from Legends

Books are the number one source of knowledge. There are millions of self-help books and other non-fiction books. How to judge which book can really help you in your path forward? There are certainly a few classics which are simply a must-read; from Siddartha to Think and Grow Rich.

However, on the other side, there are millions of books which were simply written to make the author rich. Authors who wrote books without actually experiencing it. There is nothing wrong about investigative books written by great and courageous authors. When it comes to learning about life, I found that there is nothing more valuable than biographies and autobiographies.

Biographies portray the entire life of a person. Autobiographies do the same but they are written by the person him- or herself – that’s why autobiographies usually have a biased point of view or leave certain topics or phases out entirely. With both formats, you get all the life’s experiences and learnings from a person who might have been a successful musician, actor, businessman, politician, activist, and so forth. No matter what your passions and your goals are, there are people similar to you who have already been there and done that. Good biographies or autobiographies are more fascinating than any fiction book and wiser than any non-fiction book.

Here are my three favorite biographies and autobiographies I’ve read in the recent years:

Looptail by Bruce Poon Tip

Total Recall by Arnold Schwarzenegger

When I Stop Talking. You’ll Know I’m Dead by Jerry Weintraub

What are your favorite biographies and autobiographies? Please leave a comment and I’d love to add them to my reading list.
